Lawmakers and Legco officials saw the fruits of their hard work yesterday when Priscilla Leung Mei-fun gave out a juicy bonus at the last meeting of the term.
Leung, of the Business and Professionals Alliance, pushed a trolley with a big box of mandarins - pronounced "gum" in Cantonese, which also means sweetness in another word with the same pronunciation - and distributed the fruit as farewell gifts before the recess and election on December 19. She said the mandarin is a symbol to "share sweetness."
It also represents "after the bitter comes the sweet" to thank people for their efforts over the past five years.
Leung told reporters she grew up near Yau Ma Tei fruit market, and she dropped by the market yesterday to pick the mandarins.
The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong also gave out cakes to reporters.
Party chairwoman Starry Lee Wai-king praised reporters for their hard work, as they often called for comment on current affairs. "I wish everyone happiness. See you soon," she said, seemingly hinting at her return after the election.
