Fancy-free cyclist dodges tunnel staff

A cyclist riding through the Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel has caused an online outcry.

He was spotted cycling without a helmet or protective gear last Thursday. His bike had a tail light and he was behind a truck.

The driver who posted the video said he was shocked. "How can a bicycle cross the tunnel? Without a helmet? Are you crazy? Or you think you are so cool?" he asked.

"Pedal harder. Pedal harder," he said.

Cheng King-fai, manager of the Cross Harbour Tunnel operator, confirmed that surveillance camera footage showed a biker riding into the tunnel from Gloucester Road in Wan Chai at 7.20pm. "Due to the heavy traffic, and because the bicycle was closely following the truck, our staff did not notice it," he said.

He said that considering the speed, it is estimated that the bike was electric. The company has informed the police.

The road tunnels regulations say a person entering a tunnel on foot or by bike is liable to six months in jail and a HK$5,000 fine.
