Olympics badminton player Tse Ying-suet has been criticized by a "jealous" netizen for buying a flat when taxpayers are supporting her career as an athlete.
But others hit back and said she deserves it.
Tse left the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games without a medal but she has risen to fame and was booked for advertisements selling menstrual pads and eye drops.
Last Thursday she was spotted registering to buy property at The Arles in Fo Tan.
Her appearance drew criticism from one netizen who said on a civil servants' "secret forum" Facebook page: "How is it possible for a Hong Kong athlete to earn that much public money to buy a flat?"
The netizen accused Tse of being a full-time influencer and slammed the public for helping her to buy a flat.
Hundreds of Facebook users then called the anonymous critic unreasonable and jealous.
One said: "Are you going to take care of her when she retires?"
Another wrote: "If a person who has made Hong Kong proud does not deserve to purchase a flat with their earned money then the person who posted should not be born."
