Musk lets Bezos know he's gone higherCentral Station | 13 Oct 2021
Tesla co-founder Elon Musk had fired off a tweet to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos with a silver medal emoji after the gap between the world's two richest people increased with the surging valuation of Musk's rocket company.
Musk's net worth is now US$222 billion (HK$1.72 trillion) while Bezos is at $190.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The jab escalates a spat between the two, with both trying to rule the private space industry. Bezos's Blue Origin is challenging a US government contract with Musk's SpaceX to develop technology to land people on the moon. Musk earlier called Bezos a "copy cat" for his space-focused ventures.
Musk sent his medal message after he added about US$9 billion to his fortune on Friday following a deal with investors that valued SpaceX in excess of US$100 billion - more than quadruple the size of Blue Origin.
But Musk still derives around three-quarters of his wealth from Tesla, which he co-founded in 2003 after selling PayPal to eBay.
