Cuts and thrusts for TVB interviewer

Central Station | 28 Jul 2021

A TVB reporter was mocked for what people said was her unprofessional behavior - blowing kisses to gold-medal-winning fencer Edgar Cheung and blurting about her liking for him - when she was supposed to be seeking insights.

Kelly Chan Yeuk-lam was the first reporter with an opportunity to put post-bout questions to Cheung but got carried away with the golden opportunity.

She gushed: "You are the pride of Hong Kong! What do you want to say to Hongkongers with all of them watching the live broadcast? I like you so much! What should I do?"

The 25-year-old Chan then went on to interrupt Cheung several times when he tried to describe his winning feelings.

The fallout from her performance continued yesterday, though she at first tried to parry the thrusts of bemused viewers by insisting on Instagram that there was nothing wrong with her interview style.

But she deleted the post as negative feedback continued to pour in.

Then TVB Olympic programming production manager Wai Sai-fai said Chan had been excited rather than unprofessional. Still, TVB asked her to calm down.
