Catching crooks the Zaffar way

Central Station | Maisy Mok 7 May 2021

Undercover cop Ifzal Zaffar is spelling out the advantages of his foreign looks to catch crooks.

Constable Zaffar, a Hong Kong-born Pakistani, boasts a 100 percent success rate when he goes undercover - including pretending to be a tourist to prosecute taxi drivers who overcharge.

Zaffar says non-Chinese have an advantage in police operations.

Zaffar is among several South Asian cops in the city. He says he can get more information from non-Chinese as they share the same tongue.

"If we ever encounter any non-Chinese that are emotional, we will be able to conciliate with them even just on the phone," he says.

When the epidemic started last year, he was assigned to the airport and lockdown areas to explain quarantine and testing measures to minorities.

Zaffar said he joined the force to help the public, especially non-Chinese. He is now an instructor in the force's Project Gemstone, a scheme that provides foreign youths with Chinese language classes.
