Tycoon gives $3m to fire victims

Tycoon Li Ka-shing has donated HK$3 million to relatives of the victims of a fire inside an unlicensed Nepali restaurant in Yau Ma Tei on Sunday night.

The grant will be distributed by the Home Affairs Department, the Li Ka Shing Foundation said yesterday.

It said Li is deeply upset by the pain the fire caused, adding: "We hope the deceased can rest in peace, and the injured can recover as soon as possible."

Pok Oi Hospital also said yesterday that it would offer emergency relief funds to families affected by the accident, including HK$20,000 to the injured and HK$30,000 to families of the dead. Hundreds of people were seen queuing up outside the tenement to present bouquets and light candles to pay tribute to the deceased.

The fire killed seven people, including two children, devastating four families. Seven of the injured were in critical condition yesterday. One was serious, and two remained in stable condition.
