Food and health chief Sophia Chan Siu-chee has fallen victim to hackers who accessed her WhatsApp account.
A Food and Health Bureau spokesman said Chan's WhatsApp has been suspended, but information about her government work has not been leaked after government IT workers checked her social media application.
The spokesman did not say when her account was hacked.
The honorary president of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, Francis Fong Po-kiu, recommends citizens use two-step authentication on WhatsApp so accounts are double-secured by the mobile phone number and a pass code.
But he warned hackers could disguise themselves as the WhatsApp team and ask users to input their pass codes, or send links carrying Trojan malware allowing them to take control over the accounts once the recipients open the links.
