Phantom disappears after 34 years

Central Station | 30 Jul 2020

The Phantom of the Opera will no longer run in London after 34 years due to the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Touring productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber's long running musical will also not go ahead.

The decision followed an announcement in June by producer Cameron Mackintosh that the musical would not be reopening in 2021 along with his other shows Hamilton, Les Miserables and Mary Poppins.

The Phantom of the Opera is a performance of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel of the same name, following the story of soprano singer Christine Daae as she stalked by a masked figure living beneath the Paris Opera House.
