Legco status saves Junius

Central Station | Cindy Wan 17 Oct 2019

Pro-establishment lawmaker Junius Ho Kwan-yiu is off the hook over profanities spoken about Claudia Mo Man-ching.

The Equal Opportunities Commission cannot follow up the case despite receiving about 30 inquiries from the public because the incident occurred in the Legislative Council.

On a radio program yesterday, the commission chairman, Ricky Chu Man-kin, said the Sex Discrimination Ordinance does not empower the EOC to handle complaints over remarks made by lawmakers in Legco.

"Things happening in the Legislative Council do not fall within the responsibility of the commission," he said.

But the EOC considers Ho's remarks inappropriate and urges lawmakers to engage in parliamentary discussions in a mutually respectful manner, he said.

Also, the EOC received more than 300 inquiries about alleged sexual harassment by police, with many concerning how protesters were inappropriately treated during searches.

As the inquires were all made by concerned citizens, Chu encouraged the victims to seek help from the EOC in person so that the watchdog can follow the complaints more efficiently.
