Lam and Wang shake to end 'rift'

Speculation over the chief executive's frosty relationship with Liaison Office director Wang Zhimin was put to bed as they finally shook hands.

The rumor surfaced after Wang and Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor failed to shake hands at the opening ceremony of a Buddhist art museum on March 27.

Tycoon Li Ka-shing tried to initiative a handshake between the two, but Lam looked away. With Li holding Wang's hand at the time, the latter withdrew his hand.

The awkward moment was captured on camera, and caused speculation over Lam and Wang's relationship to spread like wildfire.

However, the rumors were quashed yesterday as the pair shook hands immediately after Lam saw Wang at the Conrad Hong Kong, the venue for the National Security Education Day Hong Kong Symposium.

But in an almost deja vu moment, Lam forgot about Wang later during a group photo op, after she had shaken hands with former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa.

Embarrassed, Lam and Wang eventually shook hands again while laughing.
