The Office of the Communications Authority said 255 MHz of spectrum in 19 frequency blocks was auctioned off to four mobile network operators at total spectrum utilization fees of HK$1.88 billion yesterday.
Telecoms giant HKT (6823) said it successfully bid for 5G spectrum in the 700 MHz and 2600 MHz bands respectively at a government auction that commenced Monday. The spectrum utilization fee for use of the spectrum for 15 years totals HK$599 million.
The newly assigned 5G spectrum in the 700 MHz band, it said ,will help strengthen its 5G network coverage in terms of indoor reception and wide area coverage. It also bid for additional spectrum in the 2600 MHz band, to boost its existing holding, it said.
Following the auction, HKT will hold the largest amount of spectrum in the 2600 MHz band, as well as the most spectrum in the low bands including the 700 MHz band and others, it said.
In addition to HKT, China Mobile also bid for the spectrum with spectrum utilization fees of HK$649 million
The other two winners are Hutchison Telephone and SmarTone (0315), with spectrum utilization fees of HK$252 million and HK$377 million, respectively.
