Cathay sees fewer cargo and people

Business | Tereza Cai 17 Jan 2020

Cathay Pacific (0293) saw a 3.6 percent decline in the number of passengers carried last month, while demand for travel into Hong Kong continued to be weak, with inbound passenger traffic falling 46 percent year-on-year, unchanged from November.

Outbound traffic fell 4 percent in December -- a further improvement over the previous few months, but still significantly below what it would expect for a peak holiday month, said the company.

Looking ahead, advance bookings for Chinese New Year appear promising, with an increase in transit passengers. However, it is still a significant shortfall for the period after the Lunar New Year, especially from inbound traffic.

Overall cargo volume in December was on par with November. Mainland China and Southwest Pacific routes were particularly strong performers.
