Ironically, considering that Hong Kong is just next door to Macau, finding authentic Portuguese dishes is difficult here. But there is one spot on the second floor of Parekh House in Central.
Casa Lisboa is back after a six-month absence. Using fresh ingredients imported directly from Portugal, the restaurant has reinvented traditional dishes.
Highly recommended is the Portuguese octopus confit in moscatel wine and grilled kale and mashed potatoes (HK$280). The Portuguese traditionally prepare octopus by poaching and grilling but at Casa Lisboa, the octopus is steamed with wine for a sweet aroma.
The piri-piri quail with fresh tomato, garlic and olive oil molho (HK$180) is seasoned for 48 hours with chili, honey, rosemary, thyme and salt before going into the roaster. Later, the rosemary is set alight, giving the quail a smoky scent.
The signature suckling pig slow- roasted a Bairrada (HK$260) is a blast to the palate. Two-mouth-old piglets are marinated for one whole day, according to the ancient Bairrada recipe. Because of this meticulous preparation, its meat is succulent and its crispy skin mouth- watering.
Other dishes also come with a twist. The A5 grade flame-grilled chunk rib or preguinho (HK$380) features wagyu beef seasoned for a day with black pepper, olive oil, bay leaves and garlic then cooked sous vide. For the Portuguese brown crab or sapateira (HK$155), the crab meat is mixed with mayonnaise, onion and celery.
Green at Hotel Icon has teamed up with celebrity chef Andre Correia for the Taste of Portugal promotion which runs until August 23. Focusing on seasonal ingredients from the south - notably seafood, fresh herbs and traditional spices, Correia's dishes are light and delectable.
The highlight are the Portuguese piri piri garlic prawns (HK$128). The tangy piri piri sauce is balanced by the sweet fresh prawns. A summer hit is seared tuna with Azores spice and mango sauce (HK$98), featuring a sweet and sour taste.
Other Portuguese dishes include chorizo bun with confit onion and Madeira spice (HK$78), codfish with caramelized onion and cornbread crust on spinach (HK$128) and Alentejo-style black pork with clam emulsion (HK$98).
Wine and spirits from Portugal's main wine producing regions are also available.
