University of Hong Kong will launch seven new programs - including a double degree in science and law - in the 2022-23 academic year.

The five-year double-degree program - bachelor of science and bachelor of laws, the first of its kind in Hong Kong - is for students who aspire to develop expertise in both fields.

It "gives HKU a head start in developing an innovative program with unique characteristics," a spokeswoman said.

Students will have to study science major, law professional core courses and law-and-science interdisciplinary courses. Internships and placements will also be in the course.

The program will consider the best six subjects in the Diploma of Secondary Education examinations.

Applicants must meet the minimum entrance requirements of level 5 in English, level 4 in Chinese, level 2 in mathematics and liberal studies and level 3 in two elective subjects, mathematics extension one or two.

One of the elective subjects must also be a science subject - biology, chemistry, physics, combined science or integrated science.

For locals, the tuition fee is HK$42,100 annually for the first four years while the fifth will cost HK$85,000. There are 20 spots for the course.

Five big-data driven programs will also be introduced in response to the growing demand for data science professionals.
