It's cool next couple of days - then expect some surgesTop News | Cissy So 20 Nov 2019
Make sure you're dressed up for another cool day today. Yesterday was the coolest day this autumn, with temperatures dropping to below 18 degrees Celsius.
Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, this morning will remain relatively cool - with the lowest temperature expected to be 18 degrees in the urban areas and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories.
The maximum temperature will be about 24 degrees during the day.
The temperature plunged overnight. The Hong Kong Observatory recorded 17.9 degrees, about 10 degrees lower than the highest temperature of 28 degrees on Monday.
In parts of the New Territories, the temperature dropped to as low as 16 degrees in Tai Po, Shek Kong, Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long and Tseung Kwan O. In Ta Kwu Ling and Tsuen Wan it hit 15 degrees.
The weather is expected to be mainly fine and dry for the next couple of days, with moderate northerly winds, becoming fresh easterlies later today.
The northeast monsoon affecting the coast of Guangdong will moderate in the middle and later parts of this week, while temperatures over the region will rise gradually.
The highest temperature will hit 25 degrees on Friday to Sunday. It might be cloudy with a few rain patches.
"At the start of next week, another surge will be coming, leading the temperature to drop again," said the observatory's scientific officer Chong Sze-ning.
The temperature is expected to drop to 19 degrees at the lowest from next Tuesday to Thursday, while the highest will reach 23 to 24 degrees.
"It happens in the period of the weather change from autumn to winter, when there will be a lot of surges," Chong said.
"There will be a northeast monsoon coming and going during the time, so that the weather will keep rising and dropping from time to time."
When asked whether this autumn would be warmer than usual, Chong said it was uncertain at the moment. But this October broke the record for the highest monthly mean maximum temperature of 29.5 degrees, which is 1.7 degrees above normal.
Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Kalmaegi is expected to move southwest in the next couple of days when it enters the central part of the South China Sea and weakens gradually.
