The london underground's Northern Line extension has added two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station to connect South London to the center of England's capital city.
That brings the total number of stations on the London Underground network to 272.
Construction of the 3.2-kilometer Northern Line extension, which cost 1.1 billion (HK$11.7 billion), began in November 2015 and is the first major expansion of the London Underground since 1999.
In the initial stage there will be six trains an hour for peak times on the extension and five an hour during off-peak periods.
The frequency of services will be doubled by mid-2022.
In recent years, billions of pounds of investment have been pumped into the vicinity of the Battersea Power Station, while the decommissioned coal-fired power station itself has been redeveloped for residential and commercial use.
It opens next year as a retail, entertainment and office complex, with over 100 shops, restaurants and cafes, a 1,400-person capacity events venue, a unique chimney lift to offer 360-degree panoramic views of London's skyline, office space and 254 apartments.
And with the opening of the Northern Line extension, Battersea Power Station will be only 15 minutes from central London.
Meanwhile, Nine Elms station on Wandsworth Road is home to developments including the new US embassy and the revamped New Covent Garden Market.
Transport for London estimates that the Northern Line extension will provide 25,000 new jobs and 20,000 new homes.
Transport secretary Grant Shapp said these upgrades extend vital connectivity across London and show the power of transport connections.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said the Northern Line extension will play an important role in London's recovery from the pandemic.
And still to come is the Elizabeth line, the biggest addition to the London transport network. That will open in the first half of next year.
