Dual Diploma at Canadian International School of Hong KongEducation | 27 Apr 2021
Undeniably Canadian in culture and feel, Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) is also truly an international community. Founded in 1991, CDNIS is home to over 1,800 students representing more than 40 different nationalities across 15 grade levels from Early Years (3 years old) to Grade 12.
To cater to this international and global-minded community, CDNIS students graduate with two very distinct and highly sought after diplomas: the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP), and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). CDNIS is the only school outside of Canada where students graduate with both the IBDP and the OSSD, providing not only a balanced education for students, but a seamless transition to post-secondary institutions in Canada and around the world.
An IB education is one of the most rigorous and challenging programmes available, and IB students at CDNIS develop strong academic discipline and skills, and balanced social and emotional attributes, as they are encouraged to think independently and take control of their own learning. CDNIS also has one of the most well-established and successful IB Diploma programmes in Hong Kong and this is due, in part, to the school offering one of the most varied course selection lists of its kind of any Diploma programme in the city. This allows CDNIS students a higher level of flexibility when making their IB subject choices as students are able to pick classes that reflect their abilities, strengths and interests.
Some students and parents may wonder if the CDNIS dual diploma programme doubles the workload of students in their final years at the school. This is not the case, as the programmes are highly complementary; the majority of the subject material required for OSSD courses is contained within the equivalent IB course, which is taught as one course. CDNIS’ teachers ensure that their classroom instruction covers all subject requirements of the two curricula.
By providing flexibility, not only do CDNIS students achieve exceptional academic results, they also gain acceptance into the world’s most selective and competitive post-secondary institutions. The dual diplomas open doors for CDNIS graduates since some post-secondary institutions favour the OSSD while others prefer the IB Diploma. Many universities value the OSSD for its awarding of final grades and course credits in Grade 11, while the Diploma programme operates from a predicted achievement model until final results are published in July of a student’s final year.
Members of the Class of 2020 achieved an average score of 38 points, which placed CDNIS among the top international schools in the world. In addition, the 114 graduates received offers from more than 140 universities, in nine different countries and ultimately enrolled in 56 different universities. Members of the Class of 2020 accepted offers to study at universities around the world including the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London, University of California Berkeley, University of Southern California, University of Toronto, McGill University, University of British Columbia and the University of Hong Kong, and were offered more than HK$14 million in scholarships.
CDNIS is proud of our students who excel inside and outside the classroom. To learn more or apply, please visit www.cdnis.edu.hk.
