UCM: holistic music education for young learners

Education | 9 Jul 2020

Upon the solid foundation of inquiry-based learning and holistic education led by our Founding Principal Dr. Christina Lidman, United Christian Music Kindergarten (UCM) offers a unique music-focused curriculum in its spacious, safe and beautiful 35,000-sq. ft. campus located in Tseung Kwan O.

UCM utilises the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) in which the focus of learning shifts from measuring outcomes to driving children’s learning and development. Children’s progress is assessed via observation by teachers and recorded in learning journals.

Music is a core addition to the formula of the UCM difference. Music improves the development of language processing abilities, as well as a wide range of cognitive functions such as attention and concentration, visual-spatial perception, and executive function. Playing music also helps build self-esteem and develop social and emotional awareness. In preparing for a musical performance, children learn to focus, be patient and resilient, be cooperative, and acquire self-confidence and interpersonal skills.

Parents are children’s first educators. Our teachers work closely with parents to understand the developmental needs of each student and let children develop at their own pace. At the end of each IEYC learning unit, parents are invited to attend their children’s “Celebration of Learning”. UCM conducts parent workshops to share techniques that help improve the effectiveness of communication with their children.

UCM also offers the Play Miles programme which is inspired by Montessori’s ‘Practical Life’ and ‘Sensorial’ activities. This programme uses a holistic approach for all infants and toddlers to learn about caring for oneself, seek knowledge based on interests and respect the environment.

Info days will be held on June 7th. An introduction to UCM will be offered by way of an online webinar, followed by private school tours for parents to experience our beautiful purpose-built campus and to talk to the dedicated staff. Prior registration is required.
