A whole host of people - famous, rich and gifted - have been awarded the coveted Golden Visa, which offers its holders the golden chance to live, work or study in the United Arab Emirates without a national sponsor and with complete ownership of their businesses on its mainland.
A few of the illustrious list of names to have received the five or 10-year residency are the head of the Indian Business Professional Council, Dilip Sinha; Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam; the Grand Mufti of India Sheikh Abubakr Ahmed; and disabled artists Victor Sitali, Sharan Budhrani and their teacher Gulshan Kavarana.
The artistic community said the visa was a tribute to their talent and spirit.
"I now have independence. I can think only of working hard," said Sitali, a Zambian painter.
Nigam also thanked the UAE government while speaking about his 27-year journey with the country, adding: "I look forward to contributing whatever I can to Dubai and its people."
A number of Indian celebrities have received the Golden Visa, including Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and South Indian stalwarts Mohanlal, Mammootty and Dulquer Salmaan.
