A light-hearted yet surprising moment from an inter-school swimming competition went viral on Thursday, showing young athletes not only racing the clock but also each other—quite literally—in opposite directions.
The video, shared widely on social media that afternoon (Oct 9), was accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek caption: “Interesting scene at the D2 division competition, good job.”
The clip shows the girls’ 100m breaststroke and the boys’ 50m butterfly races taking place simultaneously in the same pool at Victoria Park Swimming Pool—but in opposite directions.
The unusual setup led to near-collisions in several lanes, creating an awkward and potentially risky situation that drew laughter and disbelief online.
The footage quickly sparked discussion among netizens, with many raising safety and organizational concerns. “A new kind of obstacle course for swimming,” one commenter joked.
In response, a spokesperson for the Schools Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China, clarified that the mix-up between the women’s A-grade 100m breaststroke and the men’s C-grade 50m butterfly was simply a “misunderstanding.”
While both groups of swimmers were lined up on opposite ends of the pool, the C-grade boys reportedly mistook the starting signal for their own event, leading to the unexpected mid-pool encounter.
The federation confirmed that both races were re-run after the morning session concluded.
It added that additional reminders will be issued to participating schools and swimmers—particularly C-grade students, who may have less competition experience—to help ensure that such mix-ups do not happen again.
