A heartwarming moment on Hong Kong’s MTR has touched netizens after a mainland Chinese immigrant shared how a local auntie’s small act of kindness restored her faith in the city’s civic-minded culture.
The woman, who moved to Hong Kong from Shanghai, posted on Xiaohongshu about the encounter she had while riding the MTR.
She noticed a wet stain on a seat—likely from a leaky grocery bag left by a previous passenger—and stood nearby to warn others. When a middle-aged Hong Kong woman approached, she cautioned her about the dirty seat.
To her surprise, instead of simply avoiding it, the auntie pulled out tissues and carefully wiped the mess clean.
Expecting her to take the seat afterward, the netizen was surprised when the auntie disembarked at the next stop, carrying the soiled tissues with her, presumably to dispose of them properly later.
Moved by the gesture, the Shanghai native wrote, “I was instantly warmed. I didn’t even have tissues on me—I’m ashamed I lack her mindset.” She praised Hong Kong as a “high-quality city,” sparking a wave of agreement online.
Local netizens weren’t shocked by the auntie’s behavior, explaining that such civic responsibility is ingrained early.
“Hongkongers learn this in kindergarten!” one commented, while others noted, “Public spirit is cultivated from childhood,” and “It’d be stranger not to do this.”
Many highlighted how small acts of consideration create a ripple effect, inspiring others to pay kindness forward. Some also pointed to Hong Kong’s strict littering fines as further motivation: “You take your trash with you—that’s the norm here.”
