MTR can limit the number of pets passengers are allowed to carry on trains and require kitties and puppies to remain fully contained within pet carriers or strollers, an animal care group suggested.
This came as sources revealed that MTR is considering allowing passengers to travel with pets on its trains as early as the first half of this year, with the Light Rail system expected to be the first to trial due to its independent operations.
Avis Fung Suk-kwan, chief executive officer of Paws Hero, said on a radio program Thursday that Taipei Metro has allowed pets on board and suggested that Hong Kong can permit small pets on trains, as long as they are kept in carriers without any part of their bodies protruding.
She also advised that pets known to bark should not be permitted on trains.
Fung stated that restrictions on public transport create challenges for taking animals out, forcing owners to rely on taxis or pet-friendly ride services.
Having previously owned a large dog, she noted: “It’s not just difficult; it’s nearly impossible for me to catch a taxi [with my dog.]”
Regarding opposition to allowing pets on public transport, Fung acknowledged the need for transport providers to balance different interests.
However, she hopes to offer pet owners more options and space by adopting inclusive practices.
Recognizing that public concerns may arise from a lack of understanding about pets, she believes that with proper regulations, pet owners can be responsible and foster harmony between humans and animals.
