The Consumer Council tested 12 air circulator fans' safety and functionality, finding that eight models could not pass specific safety tests.
Air circulator fans, also known as convection fans, are generally smaller than traditional floor or table fans, and the shape of the fan head is generally cylindrical. They see widespread use in Hong Kong to combat the hot and humid summer.
The Council tested 12 models of air circulator fans with prices ranging from HK$398 to HK$1,149 regarding their safety, airflow rate, energy-saving performance, noise level, and ease of use.
Four models received the highest overall rating of 4.5 points, while the remaining failed some safety test parameters.
Among the models that performed below par, four were found with insufficient insulation distances that could increase the risk of electric shock. The materials of two models did not comply with the standard for resistance to fire, while one model posed risks of catching children's fingers. Furthermore, one of the model's motor winding temperatures was found to exceed the standard when operated at a higher voltage.
Separately, the watchdog said the energy efficiency of the tested fans varied by up to 67 percent, with one found to be more than double compared to the lowest power consumption.
The consumer watchdog urged users to unplug the fan if they were planning not to use it for an extended period to save energy. It also suggests consumers compare prices, energy usage, function, and design before buying an air circulator fan.
