British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is excited about the Oxford vaccine's effectiveness, Sky News reports.
He tweeted: "Incredibly exciting news the Oxford vaccine has proved so effective in trials. There are still further safety checks ahead, but these are fantastic results.
"Well done to our brilliant scientists at @UniofOxford & @AstraZeneca, and all who volunteered in the trials."
England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty said the news was a "very encouraging step forward.''
Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK government's chief scientific adviser, said: "Congratulations to the great teams who have worked on the University of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines.
"It is great to have another positive readout for a vaccine against COVID-19. This is a huge achievement."
