An online store selling affordable smartphones preloaded with the LeaveHomeSafe contact tracing app has sold 500 units at HK$150 each in two weeks.

The government announced earlier that starting from December 9, compulsory usage of the LeaveHomeSafe app will be extended to all premises regulated under the Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation, including restaurants,  gyms, and beauty parlors.

However, many are concerned elderly citizens are not familiar with smartphones, nor can they afford buying new ones.

Fairbuy, an online and physical sales platform, launched an affordable smartphone offer, selling China Mobile A1s smartphones with the LeaveHomeSafe app pre-installed at HK$150 each.

The store’s social media post have seen more than 400 comments, many of whom said they are interested in purchasing the phones for their elderly relatives.

The store owner said that more than 500 phones were sold within two weeks, adding that he hoped they would help "old friends" and those in need.

However, he added that not all the phones are brand new and that only a limited number of stock is available.
