The second Country Club ITF Seniors Open 2021 was successfully held earlier this month, as the local tennis community rejoiced in being able to compete in some exhilarating games amid the pandemic.

Hosted by the Hong Kong Country Club from November 1 to 5, the senior tennis tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) was a long time coming due to Covid-19 restrictions. The tournament attracted 260 high-calibre tennis players from the local tennis scene who were happy to return to the courts to showcase their skills and competitive spirit.

Overlooking the scenic shores of Deep Water Bay, the Hong Kong Country Club has been at its current site since 1961, as it nestles unobtrusively in five acres of secluded mature grounds. Tennis has always been one of the most popular sporting activities among members of the Club, and the organisers were pleased with the enthusiastic turnout of players and spectators.

The Country Club ITF Seniors Open 2021, organised and managed by the Hong Kong Country Club in partnership with the Hong Kong Veterans’ Tennis Association (HKVTA), is a single-elimination tournament designed for male and female players aged 45 and over in 18 different age categories. The programme lasted for five days with a prize money pool of up to US$50,000.

“Since opening the doors 60 years ago, tennis has always been the preferred sport of Hong Kong Country Club Members. Therefore, we are delighted to be hosting an ITF’s sanctioned senior tennis tournament here at the club for the second time,” said Lawrence Tong, Chairman of the Hong Kong Country Club. “The Tournament is a major part of the international sports calendar, and spectators within the community had a wonderful time observing and supporting the best players locally.”

“The Hong Kong Country Club’s support of initiatives that promote a healthy, active lifestyle for the community continues to expand,” noted Bertrand Petton, the Club’s General Manager. “Leveraged by our long-term fruitful partnership with the ITF and the HKVTA, we aim to inspire more adults, in addition to seniors, to pick up a racquet and enjoy the many benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.”

The long-standing commitment of the Hong Kong Country Club in developing tennis excellence in Hong Kong continues as always, with efforts in nurturing local tennis players through its Tennis Scholarship and Free Tennis Summer Camp programmes. Some of the players who competed in this year’s tournament grew up playing tennis at the Club, making their return to the court an even more momentous occasion.
