Stocks enough for 2.5m HKers to get a third jab: expert

There should be enough vaccines for 2.5 million Hongkongers to take a third Covid-19 jab, a leading pharmacist said.

William Chui Chun-ming, President of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists, made the estimation as the government has purchased 7.5 million doses of Sinovac and BioNTech jabs respectively.

A booster shot is recommended for all, regardless of whether one received Sinovac or BioNTech jabs, he said in a radio program on Wednesday.

"Sinovac is about 50 percent effective and the antibody level of people who have completed two doses lowers after six months, so it is not surprising that a third dose is recommended," Chui said.

He also said that people who have received BioNTech may also need a third dose, but their cases are less urgent.

He believed that people over 60 years old or those immunocompromised need the third dose the most.

Chui also said that foreign studies have shown that the level of antibodies is higher after mixing BioNTech and AstraZeneca.

"I believe that the government will suggest people who have received Sinovac vaccines to continue receiving the same brand it for the third dose, but it is ok if they would like to switch to BioNTech,” he said.

The Scientific Committees of the Centre for Health Protection will meet next Wednesday to discuss whether a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine is needed.
