Patriots regardless of political parties welcomed in elections: Carrie LamLocal | 21 Sep 2021 3:38 pm
Democrats and localists who consider themselves patriots are always welcomed to stand in elections, said Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.
Speaking to media this morning, reporters pointed out that there was almost no politician from non-establishment camp standing in Sunday's election, and asked if the Central Government was happy about that. Lam only responded that the eligibility of a politician to stand in an election won't be limited by his or her political stands.
She added politicians who consider themselves democrats or from the non-establishment camp should ponder the question that whether they are patriots and will they prioritize the future of Hong Kong. If yes, they are welcomed in the elections, she said.
Lam also said if those politicians didn't stand in the elections how could they be elected, stressing that politicians can still voice different opinions under “Patriots Ruling Hong Kong” system as they get into the government through election.
She on the other hand asked would it be a harsh requirement to ask them to uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the SAR government.
Lam on another note said the revamped democratic system suits the city better.
"In a way, it's a democratic system that suits Hong Kong better, because there are still elections," said Lam.
