Tung Chung set to see new wet marketHong Kong | 21 Jun 2021 5:57 pm
An air-conditioned temporary wet market with 36 stalls will be built in Tung Chung by the end of next year at the earliest, the Food and Health Bureau announced today.
The bureau said the wholly covered market will be built on Fu Tung Street near Tung Chung MTR Station. The stalls will mainly sell fresh food such as meat, fish, vegetables and fruits.
Upon study by relevant departments, the government plans to consolidate the area between Fu Tung Street and Cheung Tung Road for the establishment of a temporary market.
Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan Siu-chee said it takes time to build new markets, therefore selecting a suitable site in Tung Chung Town Centre to provide a temporary market so as to offer more choices to nearby residents in purchasing fresh provisions.
“The modular integrated construction method will also be adopted for the Tung Chung Temporary Market with a view to shortening the construction time and completing construction works within a year's time,” said a government spokesman.
