A 37-year-old mother was sentenced to 2.5-year imprisonment at District Court today, after she splashed hot water on her children.

The mother admitted three charges on April 14, including common assault, intent to do grievous bodily harm and attempt to do grievous bodily harm to others.

On February 10 last year, the woman got upset and poured hot water on her seven-year-old son’s forehead and face, because he ate too slowly.

Two days later she also poured hot water on her son and her 10-year-old daughter during a flight with her husband. The boy’s back suffered a two-degree burn and his scalp a one-degree burn, and the girl's scalp was scalded.

The children screamed and caused the neighbors to report the incident.

Judge Katherine Lo Kit-yee said that the woman, as the guardian of the children, assaulted them at home, supposingly a safe place for the kids. Her case is the most serious one among common assault cases as her action breaches integrity.

Lo sentenced the mother to a 2.5-year imprisonment, saying that the sentence must have a deterrent effect.
