A manhunt is underway after a man broke into a Ma On Shan flat in the early hours on Friday and put a woman in a chokehold before fleeing.

According to reports, the 36-year-old woman, surnamed Kwong woke up at around 1.30am to find a man sitting on top of her in her bedroom.

As she was pinned down on her bed, the man repeatedly punch her as she put up a fierce struggle with the man in her 15th-floor flat at the Heng On Estate in Ma On Shan.

According to police, the woman claims she was placed in a chokehold for nearly 30 minutes. The assault only ended when the victim stopped struggling and yelling for help.

The man was said to leave empty-handed, though he told the woman he only wanted the money as he smashed the woman’s head against the wall.

Officers combed the area after receiving the report but were unable to find the culprit, who was described as being medium build with short hair. He was wearing a surgical mask, a dark-colored T-shirt and blue shorts at the time of the assault.

The victim suffered injuries to her neck, mouth and left shoulder and was sent to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment, accompanied by a friend.

While the woman said she did not offend anyone, she reportedly revealed that somebody had left a mark on her front door and that she believes she was being followed prior to the incident.

In the hospital, she called her father in the US and told him that she had “nearly died,” and that she hopes to leave Hong Kong and return to the States soon.

Detectives from the Sha Tin criminal investigation unit have pored over security camera footage to gather evidence. No one was arrested at the time being.
