RTHK will not pay the legal fee for the case of Bao Choy Yuk-ling, according to the union’s chairwoman Gladys Chiu Sin-yan.

Choy was found guilty for making false statements when she sought to obtain vehicle licence plate information online for producing a documentary and was fined HK$6,000.

Chiu, the chairwoman of RTHK Programme Staff Union, thanked Choy outside the court today, on behalf of the Union and those who support the freedom of the press.

Chiu said that “Hong Kong Connection” has won numerous awards with the quality of the production and even former Director of Broadcasting Leung Ka Wing praised the documentary in public.

Chiu added that the fourth estate of the press is the power to observe the government and the authority, instead of the privilege that has been mentioned recently.

When asked if search in the government’s registry can still be conducted in the future, Chiu said that she is not optimistic about that.
