A female barista was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for rioting in Mongkok two years ago.

Families cried as they heard her sentence, and her boyfriend even shouted “I will marry you when you are released!”

Siu Lok-ting, 27, was found guilty for two counts of arson and one of riot at District Court today. She was also charged of possessing a laser pointer but she was found not guilty.

Protesters were gathering outside the Mongkok Police Station on September 22, 2019, and among them some were occupying the traffic at Prince Edward Road West and setting alight debris.

Siu was charged of participating in the arson by throwing debris, including plants and cardboard in the fire.

Judge Frankie Yiu Fun-che said the riot was not plotted according to the footage of that day, yet hundreds participated in an illegal assembly outside the station. Many refused to leave after police’s warning and some even threw bricks and shot lasers at the police.

The action of Siu throwing debris into the fire and setting the fire to burn even greater could pose serious harm to the people nearby, and explains the case being a serious offence of riot, according to Yiu.
