A male finance company staff managed to keep the US$500,000 cash on him untouched after he was attacked by four masked robbers in Yau Ma Tei this afternoon - thanks to good samaritans.

One of the robbers was subdued by passer-bys and later arrested.

At around 2pm, the staff, accompanied by a woman, was attacked by four masked robbers with hammers at the junction of Nathan Road and Hamilton Street as they attempted to grab from him a bag filled with US$500,000 cash.

They failed as some passersby stepped in and helped.

The other three robbers scattered, with one running away and the other two boarding a car driven by an accomplice.

Video footage show a robber waved the hammer to keep the passer-bys at bay before he jumped onto a seven-seater, which fled the scene when its door remained open.

Police later arrived on the scene and arrested one of the suspects. The staff who suffered minor injuries was treated by paramedics and refused to be hospitalized.

Sources say the man is a finance company staff, and has been assigned to collect payment of US$500,000 from a client. They were attacked while returning to their office at Kelly Commercial Centre on Nathan Road.
