Another round of virus testing for cabbies, bus driversLocal | 30 Sep 2020 7:35 pm
Taxi drivers who were offered free coronavirus tests in mid-July during the flare-up of infections, will be able to get tested when another round begins on Saturday.
Public light bus drivers can also get tested, the Transport Department, said.
They are all required to register on the government website.
Fourteen centers will open from Saturday to collect and distribute specimen collection kits. Drivers should collect deep throat saliva specimens by themselves and return them to the temporary collection centers on the same day.
Testing will be first offered from October 3 to October 16, and the second round will be from October 27 to November 9.
Those testing positive will be referred to the Centre for Health Protection. Drivers who have received an SMS of a negative test result can collect a tag given by the taxi trade and display it in the vehicle.
In early July six infected taxi drivers were identfied in a cluster and their vehicle numbers were disclosed by health officials. Some had dined at the Sun Fat Restaurant in Jordan. By mid July 10 taxi drivers were infected and a testing program began for the drivers of more than 18,000 taxis.
