Dominant supermarket chains placed limits on essential groceries to cope with yet another scramble by households in Hong Kong to stock up in the wake of a resurgence of the coronavirus.

Wellcome supermarket restricted purchases of rice, eggs, canned meat, vegetables, and the much sought-after toilet paper.

PARKnSHOP also placed limits on groceries along with disinfectant and wet wipes.

More than half of the 40 newly-diagnosed coronavirus patients reported in the 24 hours to 4:00pm today had been infected from unknown sources.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection, said in her briefing today that “Essentially, all districts are affected.''

Among those diagnosed is a family of four living in Tsz Wan Shan, a coronavirus hot spot.

Dr Chuang described the situation as “very worrying.''

A couple living in Ngau Chi Wan were also infected from an unknown source, as were a stall owner at the Pei Ho Street market in Sham Shui Po, along with another person who frequents the market, RTHK reports.

“Half of the reported cases today we have an unknown source, so it is very worrying because the cases can spread in the community, and also we do not have a definite source – that means there are lots of unknown sources in the community that can spread easily, and they may be asymptomatic,'' Dr Chuang said.
