Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor announced in the evening today saying that the new national security law will come into effect tonight.

In a statement, Lam said the SAR government welcomes the passage of the national security law for Hong Kong, as it is an important step to improve the One Country, Two Systems institutional system as well as restore stability in Hong Kong society as soon as possible.

“The national security law will come into effect later today. The SAR government will complete the necessary procedure for publication by gazette as soon as possible to enable the implementation of the law in Hong Kong,” she wrote.

She also said the SAR Government will establish the Committee for Safeguarding National Security to be chaired by the Chief Executive as soon as possible.

Dedicated units in the Hong Kong Police Force and the Department of Justice will be responsible for implementing the relevant legal provisions in the national security law, according to Lam.

This came after Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping has already signed the national security law for Hong Kong earlier in the evening.
