The first batch of asymptomatic travelers landing at the airport this afternoon arrived at the holding center for test result set up in the Regal Oriental Hotel in Kowloon City at about 4:00pm today.

Starting from today, all asymptomatic inbound travelers arriving at the Hong Kong International Airport in afternoons or at nights are mandated to wait for test results at the hotel after their deep throat saliva are collected for coronavirus testing at the AsiaWorld-Expo temporary specimen collection center.

The travelers are given electronic wristbands and sent directly to the hotel by government coaches. They have to stay inside a hotel room and wait for the test results.

If test results return negative, they are allowed to leave the hotel and go home or to a designated place immediately to continue completion of the 14-day compulsory quarantine.

The Centre for Health Protection said it is expected that about 300 travelers will be sent to the hotel today. In general, they will only stay in the hotel for one night and will be provided basic catering services.

As for concerns about risks to the hotel employees, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said: “We have already provided support and training for the hotel staff for the infection control.”

According to quarantine orders, those staying at the hotel shall not leave their designated hotel rooms nor move around in the hotel. Offenders are subject to a maximum imprisonment for six months and fine of HK$25,000.
