Eateries in peril plead for rental solace

An alliance of small- and medium-sized restaurants has urged the government and Link REIT to take the lead and reduce rent.

Convener Gordon Lam Sui-wa, said a wave of restaurant closures has begun and that in the worst scenario, he expects half of the restaurants in Hong Kong to be closed by the middle of the year.

Some restaurants owners had said operating costs have risen as the price of face masks and cleaning supplies skyrocketed due to shortages, he said.

Lam believes that rent reduction is the most simple way to reduce costs for restaurants. He also urged Link REIT to offer rent by installments and waive penalties.
