Relief measures costing HK$10 billion aimed at relieving the burdens on low-income earners and seniors were announced today by Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

As apart of the relief package, all seniors over the age of 60 years will only pay HK$2 on public transport. She had earlier rejected the idea of lowering the age limit from 65 years for the fare concessions.

The Old Age Living Allowance and Higher Old Age Living Allowance are being combined and increased to HK$3,585 a month.

She also said the number of statutory holidays will be gradually increased to 17 days, compared with the current 12 days, following discussions with the business sector.

The government will also make contributions to the Mandatory Provident Funds of those who are unable to save more for retirement.
