Student cleared of carrying knife in bag at protest

A 19-year-old student was acquitted today of possessing a weapon at a protest last November.

A knife was found in Lam Wa-chun's backpack when he took part in the rally in Western against Beijing's Basic Law interpretation on oath-taking.

Eastern Court ruled that there was no evidence to show the defendant planned to use the knife to attack others. Deputy magistrate Arthur Lam said the accused had no criminal record and there was a rather low tendency for him to commit a crime.

The magistrate told the student to cherish the chance he was being given and to focus on his studies. He was also warned not to carry knives in public again.-RTHK
