A ‘middleman’ has told Liu Xia’s family that the late Nobel laureate’s widow is in good health, but has left Beijing to escape the summer heat.

The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said today that a "middleman" also told Liu Xia's relatives that she had left the capital to "escape the summer heat.'' It also said that her brother is with her.

Liu Xia has not been seen in public since the funeral of her husband Liu Xiaobo, who died of liver cancer last month.

Her relatives and friends are still unable to contact her.

The US, the EU, the UN high commissioner for human rights and Amnesty International have all called on Beijing to free Liu Xia, 56, who has been held under house arrest without charge since her husband won the Nobel prize in 2010.

Her lawyer has complained to the UN that his client is being held "incommunicado in an unknown location by the Chinese authorities.''-RTHK
