Liberals demand detention for asylum-seekers

Liberal Party district councillor, Dominic Lee, repeated a call today for establishing a detention camp for asylum seekers despite the Legislative Council voting down the suggestion.

He said Hong Kong must combat what he claimed were "fake refugees.''

Lee also said they not only cost the government a lot of money, but also create social problems.

The council on Thursday voted down a non-binding motion tabled by the DAB Party, demanding more stringent screening of asylum-seekers and the setting up of a detention camp.

Rights activists have condemned allegations against the asylum seekers, saying they could cause discrimination against genuine applicants. An organiser for Society for Community Organisation, Richard Tsoi, said he believed strengthening the screening process would be more fair for both the claimants and society. RTHK
