Four-day fest to mark Lunar New Year instead of street parade

A four-day food and beverage festival will be held to celebrate the Lunar New Year next year instead of the street parade, the Hong Kong Tourism Board says.

Executive Director Dane Cheng Ting-yat says there are concerns whether the Canton Road and Nathan Road street parade, which has been held over 24 years, could be held in the wake of the unrest, which has also severely negatively affected visitor arrivals.

Several sports events including the Hong Kong Open golf tournament have been canceled or postponed.

The Lunar New Year festival will aim to draw local residents and expats and will start on the first day of the new year.

The New Year’s Eve celebrations will also be held as planned on December 31.
