Off-duty police will carry extendable batons in the interest of operational efficiency, confirming media reports earlier.

Police spokesman, Tse Chun-chung, said the intensity of violnce has increased.  "Their radical acts have intensified with more dangerous and sometimes deadly weapons used,'' RTHK reports.

"In case of an emergency, which is often unpredictable, there is a need for officers to be better equipped to respond to such situations. This new measure will enable officers to enforce the law and protect public safety even when they are off-duty,” Tse said.

He added police will follow the strict internal guideline on the use of force.

The police are also setting up 10 whatsapp channels for people to notifty them of any cases of "non-urgent" violence, RTHK reports. The reports made via the platform would not be treated as being official complaints and the information would be used to help gather intelligence on any illegal assemblies, rioting, or unrest.
