The police today defended the decision by a policeman to draw his gun at  Hong Kong International Airport last night as protesters cornered him, He was trying to arrest a protester at the time and angry supporters intervened to prevent it.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mak Chin-ho, said it was "absolutely” the right decision, and it was lawful and reasonable.

Protesters cornered the policeman, grabbed his baton and pepper spray, and attacked him, Mak said.

"When the officer's life was under great danger, to protect himself and other people from death and serious bodily harm, he drew his revolver and held it up. It's a measure of defense, of emergency and necessity," Mak said.

"As protesters retreated, he immediately pulled back his revolver, and other officers came to his aid."

Mak also praised the policeman's bravery.
