PLA deployment terms made clear in laws

The Garrison Law and the Basic Law have outlined the legal basis for the deployment of the People's Liberation Army in Hong Kong, Yang Guang, the spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs office of the State Council, says in Beijing today, adding that he has nothing further to add.

Last week, the Defense Ministry said Article 14 of the Garrison Law stipulates matters related to the PLA.

Under Article 14, the Hong Kong government has room to request to the central government for deply the PLA’s Hong Kong garrison to maintain public order and to aid with disaster relief operations.

The related Basic Law article says that China's military forces stationed in Hong Kong for defense "shall not interfere in the local affairs'' of the SAR.
