The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has lodged solemn representations with the U.S. Consulate General after Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai Chee-ying.

In a statement today, a spokesperson said China opposes foreign forces intervening in Hong Kong affairs and that internal and external forces colluding with each other are destined not to end well.

“The U.S. is well aware of who Lai Chee-ying is, what his stance is and what role he plays in the Hong Kong society. At the current sensitive period in Hong Kong, top U.S. officials lining up to meet with such a person have ulterior motives and sends a serious wrong signal.”
