Police say weapons used to beat back rioters

The Police Commissioner Stephen Lo Wai-chung has called today's confrontations outside the Legislative Council a riot, adding that armed police had no choice but to use weapons to keep rioters at bay.

While condemning the protesters, Lo said there was no need to hurt innocents. He made the remarks at a live briefing.

Police used bean bag rounds, rubber bullets, tear gas, and pepper spray in challenging the protesters.

Lo said the protesters could have used metal bars to stab policemen, if force had not been used today.
Some policemen carried compressed air-powered rifles that appeared to be equipped to fire non-lethal projectiles, AP reported. It was unclear if they were shooting them.
